Dear lord, this video will make you laugh soooo hard, it is one of the funniest I’ve seen.  Starting at about 1:25 till the end. Not sure which is funnier — how the students keep screwing up their punches, or how the coach is yelling at top of his lungs. All you coaches can relate to this clip, haha.

I’ve done that kind of thing myself at the gym “up here”, usually when working with handpads. You get into a groove with a particular combination, which is another way of saying that the subconcious part of your brain is able to do the routine with little or no involvement from the conscious part of your brain. That’s what gives you flow and speed and good reactions. Then the coach asks for a different combination which requires that you re-engage the conscious part of your brain, particularly if it’s a pattern that you haven’t practiced much before. If you stay on ‘cruise control’, you may not be able to do the combination that’s been asked for, which seems to be what happened in the video.
